Climate change adaptation

Climate change is expected to lead to increased precipitation and increased run-off in much of northern Europe. In Sweden, rainfall can increase by 30 percent in large parts of the country and this may have direct consequences for geotechnical characteristics of soil and the possibilities to build on it. A changing climate also affects the risk of pollution spreading due to natural disasters.

Collaboration and research

We participate in different types of collaboration, both nationally and internationally, where we aim to improve society's ability to adapt to a changing climate. Collaboration takes place both through inter-agency collaboration and through participation in various research and development projects. We also conduct our own research.

Support and advice to other agencies

We provide support to county administrative boards and municipalities in safety issues concerning landslides, subsidence and erosion, within comprehensive planning and detailed planning. Our task is to identify and point out vulnerable and critical points in municipal planning. We also take into account fluctuating conditions due to climate changes. Rising groundwater levels or erosion can, for example, signify increased susceptibility to subsidence and landslides.

We offer, at a fee, expert support to municipalities and regional agencies in all stages of climate adaptation work - that is to say, during planning, decision-making processes and in the work to implement specific measures. We also provide expert support to national agencies in terms of overall strategic issues related to climate adaptation.

Mapping landslide and erosion risks

Every year we receive a climate adaptation appropriation from the Government to work on special assignments. One such special assignment is a comprehensive mapping of the risk of landslides and vulnerability to coastal erosion in a number of priority areas in Sweden.
